Giving

Why we give

St Thomas’ is a large and dynamic church that includes multiple congregations that share one pool of resources to fund ministry activities. Although most of the expense relates to ministry staffing, resources, and administrative expenses, we also target giving in support of ministry activities both within Australia and abroad. We are completely self-funded, meaning that our operational funds are dependent upon our members giving.

The bible provides several reasons why God’s people should learn to give:

  1. It is a grateful response to the generosity of God shown most clearly in the death of His Son (2 Corinthians 8:9)
  2. It appropriately recognises that our wealth and possessions belong to God and are given to us as a gift (1 Chronicles 29:10-16)
  3. There are certain people whom God commands us to provide for and we are partners in God’s gospel (1 Timothy 5:17-18)

In short, Christians should give because God calls us to do so, and our giving should be to support ministries for the furtherance of the gospel in the world and to help the needy.

Estate planning

Leaving a bequest to St Thomas’ Anglican is a great way to impact the spread of the gospel.

When making a gift in your will it is important to use the correct legal terminology and therefore you should consult a solicitor to draft your will which will ensure all your wishes are taken into account.

There are a number of ways that you can make provisions in your will:

  • The whole of your estate
  • The residue of your estate
  • A percentage of your estate
  • A specific amount of money

Please discuss this with your solicitor and whatever option you choose, you should add words such as: “I give to St Thomas’ Anglican Church, North Sydney (ABN 20 197 630 929) for its general purpose, free of all duties, the sum of $X for which a receipt of the Treasurer, for the time being of the church, will be a sufficient discharge for my executor or trustee.”

If you wish to discuss your plans confidentially, please contact us to speak with our Treasurer.
